Marco Valoti ”In Memory of Louis”: A Tribute Through Art
Between 2000 and 2002, I created a series of hand-printed linoleum engravings on 300g paper (25×30 cm) in memory of Louis—a sincere, kind-hearted man who left an indelible mark on my life.
Louis was 78, a gentle soul with a quiet determination. Every morning, I would find him seated by his struggling tomato plants, head inclined as if praying for their growth. The poor soil offered little hope, but Louis never stopped nurturing them.
A local restaurateur passed by daily, inspecting the tomatoes that never seemed to ripen. Still, Louis would say with quiet resignation, “We don’t have the means here.”
At the end of each month, his modest pension arrived. He would hop on his bicycle and head to the store to buy inexpensive wine—a small escape from the weight of daily life. After a few glasses, he would pick up his guitar and play frenzied, unfamiliar melodies, perhaps stories of a brighter past when life and youth were more generous.
As he played, vivid images danced through my mind—gods, dancers, and swirling winds. Despite the barren garden, Louis spoke with the wisdom of a father, rolling a cigarette and wondering aloud why nature had been so unkind to him. I sat silently beside him, sharing the weight of his unspoken sorrows.
Louis is gone now, but his spirit lingers. Those moments remain etched in my memory, and through these engravings, I’ve sought to honor him—hoping, perhaps, that the tomatoes finally bore fruit.
